A Slice of the Week, and Back in California

I'm back in Santa Monica... this is at the end of my street, the California Incline
This is when I like the 3rd Street Promenade best---6am, before the crowds! Although, it's great later too. The time change makes it nicer to be out (lighter) at 6am, and I definitely took advantage of that today since I'm still semi on NY time. Sorry it's blurry....I just snapped it while I was walking.
This was my view last week... Canandaigua Lake from Muar Cafe...it was so cold. Although I didn't totally mind the weather, as soon as I returned to California I remembered how wonderful it is here---to have sunshine and warmth everyday...
It was great to be home last week for so many reasons, but I really enjoyed and appreciated all the food my mom made while I was there. I learned a new (to me) trick for making shrimp cocktail. I'll share it soon---it's amazing!
There is something nice and cozy about camping out by the fireplace for dinner (sitting on the floor on pillows at a short table)...
...with comfort food of course! My mom is amazing in the kitchen--she tries new things all the time, and always uses herbs from their garden. I think that makes a huge difference!!
I'll admit...I drank coffee everyday that I was home. My mom made it for me, and it smelled so good (she has a variety of locally roasted coffees from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters and a french press)... Today, my first day back in CA, I bought a coffee at Starbucks--it was cold. And not good. I didn't even drink all of it. My plan is to just quit again. If I get a headache, I deserve it 🙂

Halloween was great—I was with friends and kids (including Matthew), and I spent most of the week visiting friends and spending time with my family. I believe my belongings are somewhere between there and here….but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes! I don’t mind being so minimalist for now, but I am really looking forward to having my kitchen stuff and my furniture!

Yesterday, my travel day, went well. I didn’t have in flight wifi, so I read for the entire day from 9am when I got to the airport until 5:20pm (EST) when we were about to land in LA.

I read this:

Wow—it was awesome. I highly recommend this book.

Here’s the Amazon description:

Life can be hard: your lover cheats on you; you lose a family member; you can’t pay the bills—and it can be great: you’ve had the hottest sex of your life; you get that plum job; you muster the courage to write your novel. Sugar—the once-anonymous online columnist at The Rumpus, now revealed as Cheryl Strayed, author of the bestselling memoir Wild—is the person thousands turn to for advice.
Tiny Beautiful Things brings the best of Dear Sugar in one place and includes never-before-published columns and a new introduction by Steve Almond.  Rich with humor, insight, compassion—and absolute honesty—this book is a balm for everything life throws our way.

I’m catching up on work for the rest of the day (week?)…and hopefully emails too.

It’s great to be back and I have a huge list of things to share with you—recipes, product reviews, and some other things too!

How’s your weather? Do you mind cold winters?

What’s the best book you’ve read lately?
