You have spoken, and it sounds like you are interested in candida. How exciting for me…I have so much to say about it, after my extensive experience with it personally and through research. It seems like the best way for me to start, is to tell you my story and then to address the topic in installments, with some other stuff in between to build up the suspense (i.e. prevent boredom).
My story.
I moved to Boston when I was 22, and I thought I was pretty healthy, but I did have a lot of issues with low energy and low mood. I’m not calling it depression, because it wasn’t like I was unhappy, sometimes I just…turned into a zombie and felt like I was moving through glue. I worked in the fitness program at an Air Force Base, and it was common practice for me to (1) drink some fancy sugary drinks from Dunkin Donuts in the morning and (2) to spend my whole paycheck at Whole Foods after work buying Jack Salads (named by my friend Brian–who was known for buying $18 salads and getting jacked in the gym) and fancy parfaits.

One thing led to another, and I ended up at the doctor’s office for my very responsible annual exam. I mentioned my low energy, and my doctor shrugged it off—after all, I looked healthy and my numbers were all normal. Over the next few months, something weird started happening. Occasionally, I would wake up in the morning with a hangover…when I hadn’t had anything alcoholic to drink. I couldn’t swallow water, I was shaky, my stomach felt like rot gut. The doctor, again, told me nothing was wrong with me and that exploring my (already pretty balanced, but not without splurges) eating habits wouldn’t help.
I explored it anyway.

We all always have some yeast in our bodies, and this is good. I found out that candida (yeast) imbalance or overgrowth is a major problem for many people, and when it is out of balance in the digestive tract or throughout the body, it is pretty difficult to diagnose (versus when it shows up in a more obvious way. ahem. You know what I mean.). The problem even when it does show up in an obvious way, is that it can be a symptom of a deeper inner problem or it can be just a localized bacterial imbalance. If the vaginal yeast infection (yes, that’s what I’m talking about) is treated with an OTC or prescription drug, this can be helpful for a localized imbalance (but isn’t recommended for recurring issues or digestive/systemic based problems—and it takes a little mystery-solving to figure out the origin). I don’t actually recommend the drugs for anyone. Things like garlic, caprylic acid, boric acid, and tea tree oil can be used too, with fewer side effects if done correctly.
Drugs can lead to Super Bugs and a much worse problem.

In my own experience with candida, I had atypical symptoms, like the hangovers, lethargy, skin issues, etc. For other people it can show up as digestive issues (gluten intolerance, IBS, constipation or diarrhea, bloating, gas…you get the idea), emotional imbalances, all kinds of skin issues, sinus problems, headaches, and more. Lucky for me, atypical symptoms did not lead me to try drugs to fix it. Unlucky for me, I found out through research, that antibiotic use, birth control pills, and other medications are known to cause yeast imbalance. I had been on antibiotics and birth control pills for a combined total of 8 years at that point (and continued the bc pills for another 8 after that…what was I going to do? It made my skin clear, and that seemed like a good enough compromise at the time). I did enough damage, and did not have the tendency toward the more obvious symptoms, so that I did not investigate this soon enough…or believe fully the depth of the problem.
Before I go on, consider taking this candida quiz. It’s not automated…you’ll have to add up some numbers!
Candida imbalance has been linked to so many disorders and conditions, including autism and many chronic diseases. Donna Gates is one of the leaders in the field, and I recommend her book, Body Ecology Diet very highly. I’ll pick up here next time, with more info about my experience, the problem, and what to do about it!
I will say that wanting to get to the actual root of the problem is a big reason for me to be doing my Personal Improvement Plan (PIP). PIP helps me to address things that go really deeply into my health, and with a healthy person like me, I think that regardless if the whole problem is candida…whatever is going on needs a break from all the junk in life, physically and emotionally. I’ll do a PIP update soon. Maybe not till Thursday because I’ve got a jam packed schedule that includes Matthew and skiing (and hopefully cuddling)…
Some PIP friendly foods:

The chocolate pudding makes me wish my head could fit in the blender so I could lick out all the stuff I can’t scrape out. Just being honest.
On Thursday or Friday, I’m going to talk about why I think I’ve lost a couple pounds, and what my results from PIP have been so far.
Have you ever lost weight without trying?
Do you have a favorite sugar free, non-dairy, vegan, gluten-free, no-egg, no-soy recipe snack to share with me? I need variety!
Do you have any experience (or think you may have) with candida?

I need to come and pick your brain!
my husband and i both had candida in the belly – his was worse — and a cleanse similar to what you're on made him feel 100% better in a couple of weeks!
the macaroons I made yesterday (which are gone now, because I ate them all!) are sugar free, vegan, GF and no soy: http://spicedplate.blogspot.co…
and falafel! http://spicedplate.blogspot.co…
thanks for sharing all of this with us — and for educating those who don't know about candida who may have its mysterious symptoms — it's amazing what the doctors just sort of brush aside. I'm glad i'm not alone with this!
Last time I was cleansing, I lost 30 lbs, without trying, because I ate tons of avocados and almonds and flax oil, so my calorie count was actually higher than before! This was good, because I had gained 30lbs after my system got all out of whack from 1 month of antibiotics and a year of belly problems.
Hmmm, this is interesting! Over the past few years, my diet has gone through major changes, the biggest being that I hardly eat meat or pasta anymore, two foods I used to live off of. In addition, I eat so many more vegetables than I did in my childhood, and when I got to college I started drinking soy milk because I liked the taste better. I don't know when the switch occurred, but I've become slightly lactose intolerant (I can't drink straight-up milk anymore) and my digestion seems to be much more sensitive to some milk-heavy foods (like soups or sauces). I'm not sure if this has come about from my mom's family's horrible digestive history or my eating choices!

Losing weight right now without trying…..I'd really like to gain some!
I had no idea what candida even was…..so interesting!!! Great post!
Also, I love the new layout! =D
Lisa,
This is all very interesting. I eat healthy on a daily basis with some indulgences on the weekend. I usually have great energy but almost always lose it after lunch time. I usually have some kind of mixed veggies, fruit, and sometimes a whole grain.
I also have always had problems with bloating and feeling “hungover” on the days where I sleep in more. I'd always feel out of it and would have stomach issues. Those have gotten better since I've been eating good but still happen from time to time.
I'd be interested in my very own PIP or some kind of cleanse! Just not sure where and how to start!
your story sounds like mine, crazy! Candida and gf intolerances. All is better now, but I must use some of your recipes. I might have a few recipes for you as well. But for now, chocolate avo pudding is our best friend. haha.
alex has a good one here that I adapted.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I am passing it along to my sister who seems to be having all sorts of issues right now very similar to some of the symptoms mentioned. I've never heard of candida.
Wow, I've never heard of anything like that happening with candida. Thanks for sharing though, it's a good thing to be aware of. I actually lose weight without trying pretty often. Between exercising regularly, eating healthy, and having a relatively fast metabolism it seems like I'm always having to make a conscious effort to keep my weight up.
i still need to learn to drink green smoothies, i just love the fruit ones too much 🙂
Lisa, I love this PIP thing you're doing! I really do believe in personal improvement, especially because I've learnt that eating well and regular exercise isn't anything a doctor or personal trainer can make us do. It's really in our hands. Thank you for sharing your experiences with Candida. I'd heard a little about it, but wasn't entirely sure what it meant.
That avocado pudding looks SO GOOD!
ok, i wasn't bored by your story at all, lisa! it's fascinating, actually! i look forward to hearing more in teh days ahead…but yes, place matthew time ahead of blogging, for sure!!! 🙂
i de-puffed/lost a few pounds when i stopped eating sugary cereal…now it's a treat instead of a staple item!
no recipes to share – sorry! unless you need a good ol' choco chip cookies recipe – that's all i got!
have a great eve!
Hahaha no, I have never lost weight without trying. Ever.
I did get candida when I was living in China — I got salmonella, took antibiotics, and woke up one day with a green tongue. It was super gross.
wow, thanks for sharing your story, i never heard of candida before. i'm glad you found what was wrong with your body and that you didn't have to take pills!
oh, and actually i did lose weight without trying once. i used to work in a restaurant and we never got breaks, but we DID get to eat as much sourdough bread as we wanted (you basically had to woof it down when you got a free sec.) anyway, for whatever reason i decided to skip the bread for awhile, and i swear i lost 8lbs in 2 weeks without even thinking about it. funny how that worked…. 🙂
I myself haven't dealt with candida but I can tell you i have so many clients who's issues are solved with incorporating candida friendly foods. It is amazing to see the differences in how they feel.
I am a huuuuuge fan of hummus on the kale chips. It totally rules.
I recently lost 9 pounds going gluten-free without changing anything else up. Pretty exciting shiz, actually.
Thanks for sharing your story! I've never even heard of candida before. The only time I lost weight without trying was when I got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out. I was a mess for a whole week 🙁 Love the new blog layout by the way!
Wow, thanks for all of this information. It sounds exactly like the symptoms I was having before I chose to go gluten-free. Congrats on the weight loss. The one time I lost weight without trying was when I was so stressed and I got an ulcer! Not fun stuff at all 🙁
This post was super interesting! I definitely feel like I need to do more research/keep reading your post about candida. I often wake up with terrible headaches, feel extremely fatigued for no reason and have unexplained stomach problems. I am going to take that quiz and see what it tells me! As always, thanks for keeping me in the know! 🙂 Have a great day!

Interesting stuff. I was on the pill FOREVER and once I went off (to try to start having kids), I honestly felt about 95% better! That avocado pudding sounds good! I totally want to try that!!
I just got bloodwork done for gluten testing last week b/c i've been so problematic. I want to nix the pill but I know if I did i'd be preggo in a week. I'm intrigued by your avocado pudding! I wonder if i'd like it? I'm a picky little brat! haha
I drink 1/2 to 1 whole GT kombucha most days and drink a ton of water, lemon water, and green teas to stay somewhat balanced. but I honestly have no clue what I should be doing!
A former coworker of mine had a candida issue — to be honest I don't know how she got rid of it, I think through pills, cleanses, etc. She told me it was the best thing she ever did!
I have lost weight without trying — when I was in college I seemed to have it all figured out — eat when I was hungry, stop when I wasn't hungry, exercise, etc. I hope to get back to that one day, because some days food just stresses me out!
sugar free/dairy free/vegan/gluten free/no egg/no soy treats? Veggies? Dates stuffed with peanut butter?
I've definitely got to try that pudding! Every time I see you post it, it makes my mouth water! =)
Hey gallll! Thanks for your compliments!! I know, some people see me as an adventure… other just think I'm crazy and unpredictable lol Maybe you can't be one without the other! 🙂
Oh lord, the Kombucha teaaa! If you ask me what I miss the most in the whole world from the US would be those drinks… I was totally so addicted to them… I used to drink one a day every single day… they were the best thing ever to drink before, during and after my workout. When I knew I was moving from there, I emailed the dude about the drinks begging him to start selling them outside the US, but he said it wasn't possible at the moment due to how hard it is to deal with the processing of making the kombucha and to transport (I think it is actually impossible to transport those, so he would have to open a “factory” in the country where it was supposed to be consumed – have one of those actually exploded on you? It used to happen to me all the time in the middle of whole foods lol).
I used to have a mood low energy issue as well when I was in the US… and it all stopped when I cut off refined sugar from my diet for like 1 year… so I stopped being so addicted and started having lots of energy… now I can eat refined sugar normally without thinking like I can't never stop eating if I start lol.
Omg I can't believe you eat no fruit at all?
First off, love the new header!! And wow, thanks for sharing your story. I dont think I have had any candida issues, although some of the symptoms you mentioned did sound familiar…
I was on BC for about 3 years and experienced so many side effects after stopping it: hypothyroidism, acne, no period for almost a year….looking back, i wish I had researched bc more before I started it.
That pudding looks amazing! I never loose weight accidently…I dont tend to gain either though so I guess its ok 🙂
Thank you for sharing your story. I love the idea of a PIP.
I'm glad you found my blog, so I found yours!
Once again that chocolate pudding looks fabulous!! I don't think I would mind PIP if it meant eating that :).

ginger carrots? those sound wild. I wish I could lose some weight without trying right now… it's going the other way for me currently
Great post–so much great information. I don't have an experience with candida–but since I am currently on an antibiotic for my skin, I'm very interested in getting as much info as possible! 🙂
