Coconut Oil and Sugar Facial Scrub

I don’t know about where you live, but in California in the winter, the air is much more dry than in the summer. My lips crack and my skin is dry. I do try and stay on top of my skin health with my Lazy Girl’s Approach to Oil Cleansing, my  homemade facials and pore cleaning routine, but I really like to do a stronger exfoliation once a week as well. Coconut oil is the perfect carrier oil for this because it is easy to work with and it is antibacterial as well. It makes my skin really soft, but I don’t use it as a daily moisturizer on my face because it seems to actually cause some clogged pores when I rub it in and leave it there.

Enter… the Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub!

Sugar is gritty, so that helps remove dead skin, and when used with the oil it softens and moisturizes skin as well. The key for me to clear my pores, remove dead skin, and moisturize (without leaving my skin oily) is to use the scrub and then remove all the excess oil with a damp cloth.

Here’s what you do.

Coconut Oil and Sugar Facial Scrub

1-2 Tbsp coconut oil
3 Tablespoons sugar (any kind of granular sugar is ok)

In a bowl, mix the two ingredients together. You can do this with a spoon or your fingers—it’ll take a minute if your oil is semi-hard. You can melt the oil if you like, just don’t get it too hot, or the sugar will melt in it and you could also burn your skin. Warm is good though because it can help open your pores. Make sure you’re either doing this over the skin or in the shower, and that you aren’t going to drip it onto your clothes (it will leave oil marks).

Using your fingertips, gently massage the oil/sugar mixture all over your face. Be extra gentle around your eyes (and avoid getting it in your eyes). You can massage for up to five minutes. I usually do it for 2 minutes, and then I take a warm wet wash cloth and wipe away all the excess oil and sugar. Voila—exfoliated and bright vibrant skin!

I do it every week! I comb oil through my hair and massage it fully in, leave it for about 2 hours then I do a sugar scrub on my face and leave on for 10 minutes and then I have a shower and wash it off. My hair has seriously never been healthier even before I started dying it and my skin has an amazing healthy glow to it.
