Are Californians just nicer people?

by Lisa on May 7, 2012

Every time I’ve visited my relatives in California, I leave planning to figure out my life so I can move here. I considered going to college out here too, but somehow my plan has never happened. Now, although I can easily be re-swept away by “the feeling” (as my mom and I call it when you step out of the airport into a place that’s warm and has palm trees), I can say I’m probably not moving here anytime soon.

It’s a shame, because the people here are so darn nice and happy. I can see why—I mean, look at the view from my cousin’s apartment!

We definitely have had our share of fun over the past few days. There was only one situation that was not ideal for me with food–late night drinks at a place that couldn’t serve any food (we tried to order a cheese plate) except desserts. I just drank water, and it was no big deal.

I’ve noticed a few things—people here care about what they look like, and I don’t mean just clothes. There seems to be a culture of desiring to be fit, and healthy food has been a topic several times with people I’ve met (once they find out what I do). The sun shines, and people just seem happier—there must be a connection!

We spent yesterday shopping and getting mani/pedis. Kristen needed to buy some things for her apartment so I was more than happy to help her splurge on new dishes and a lamp in anthropologie. I bought a few things at Hardtail (love love love that store!!!), and a pair of pants at Armani Exchange.

We spent the evening chatting till really late, and I was still able to get up and be at Starbucks to work at 6am! Kristen had to work today, so I walked on the beach (in the soft sand so I could get an extra leg workout), and then I went to the Flor store (where I verified which rug patterns I want and got a quote), and then went to Planet Raw for lunch.

I have more pics, but I’m posting this from my phone, so I’m not sure how to insert them in the middle–it just keeps tacking them onto the end. I’m sure you don’t mind.

I’ll be heading home tomorrow. I hope the sun is starting to make more regular appearances in NY now–I know we all have responsibility to make ourselves happy, but it sure does seem like the sun helps people’s moods! I know the connections between vitamin D and mood and all that, but it seems like there’s something more too!

One last thing. I love going on vacations and trips, and the last two have been especially good—it’s great to visit someone who can show you around, and give you a more “lifestyle” experience to the area rather than just the touristy experience.

I’ve also cemented that I need to move near the beach!

Where was the last place you traveled to?

Do you like the beach?

Do you live in the place that is ideal for you? If not, why not?

Well, you know I am  a fan of the beach ;-) Sounds lovely and I love the idea of so many people caring about their bodies and health a bit more. I wish that would catch on here. I would love to have an awesome restaurant like that or for people not to think I’m nuts for eating healthy and working out consistently.

Your trip sounds fun, Lisa! When I was in college (in CA), there was a girl from Arizona who said to another friend of ours (from New Mexico), “people from California are WEIRD.” I didn’t take offense at the time because I’m originally from the Midwest. But, now that I’ve lived in CA for over 25 years, I like your question about Californians being NICE. I suppose we are likely a combo of nice and weird, to be more exact. :)

I found your blog via itzys kitchen! your a so cute! I just got back from socal ragnar and love it! Californians are nice people and I do miss the beach quite a bit to!

I definitely think the sun makes people happier. Also, I think life is just more laid back in Cali and not as stressful and fast past as in other cities like Chicago!
I would love to move to Cali, my brother lives in LA, but I don’t know if I’d ever move away from Chicago. I like living close to my parents and family and they’re a huge part of my life.

I LOVE the beach and feel lucky that I have access to some amazing beaches in Italy for one month out of the year. In a perfect world, Rinaldo & I would love to have a vacation home somewhere near a beach with warmer climate and spend a few months out of the year there when we retire one day! :-)

Looks like you’re having a great time in Cali!

I just looooove that wine glass photo- its so cool! I’m pretty content where its warm and sunny, and our last couple of trips have been to LA and to Phoenix area, so they both fit the bill!

So glad your having a good time in Cali! If you ever decide to move there please take me with you!

I also always dream of moving near a beach, but the only way that would happen is if my whole family (20 plus peeps) would move with me. Maybe…… we would all move back to my parents home town in Italy. I wish!!

Soak up those Vit D rays and enjoy your last day there :-)

safe travels, lisa! love your photos.
yes – i totally agree that graet/sunny weather makes people nicer.
glad you had such a fun trip. i agree: the vacations where you can escape a solely tourist experience are just wonderful. maybe it’s a good thing i’ve never been to cali as i would not want to leave, i am sure. i LOVE the beach and both aruba and florida are my “natural habitats.”
glad you got some retail time in, too! :)

I love your photos Lisa! California seems like the perfect place to live for health conscious and fit foodies. I would love to live near the sea and go for a run near the beach. Ispent a couple of months in Nice, France some time ago and i fell in love with the lifestyle. I would go for swims and runs at 7 am, just to be alone at the beach. my room was actually facing the sea, about 50 m away from the beach! like a dream!! I think San Francisco would be my perfect californian city to live in… maybe maybe.. one day…

TOTALLY agree. Everytime we visit Cali for our annual wine country trips, we fall in love all over again. It is gorgeous there, the people are just happier (I swear, it’s true) and the food just seems fresher somehow. I would LOVE to live there someday!!

I often think about living somewhere warm EVERY TIME I travel somewhere with gorgeous weather. I love California and have half of my family in San Diego. I will probably never move there but in my mind it still makes no sense why I put up with horrible winters when I really don’t have too!

I’ve wondered the same thing! Everyone seemed so friendly out there, even to tourists! In DC, we are so annoyed by tourists! It seems to be just a totally different mentality…and I really love it in Cali :)

Live in SoCal and was previously in NoCal.  I agree, the sun really does help our moods to be more sunny and laid back.  It’s funny I didn’t know that we are perceived as into caring about how we look and fit because I’ve been immersed in it for so long haha!  I do get the itch to move but know that I couldn’t live anywhere that’s not on or very close to the beach.  Come and visit again soon! :)
