Weekend Trip

I went to Florida this past weekend with a friend—it wasn’t spur of the moment, but I guess I forgot to talk about it much before we went. I knew we were going, but somehow it snuck up on me (and I was totally NOT ready). Regardless…being there again cemented that I belong at the beach, or at least in a place that has no winter. (No, I would not miss the seasons)

I would, however, miss my little babe–who is still texting me, by the way. So for now, I’ll stay put here in NY.

Here are my (rank ordered) favorite places in Florida:

1. Marco Island

2. (tie) Naples and Delray Beach

3. (tie) Ft. Myers Beach and Miami

Of course, I didn’t take a camera, so I only have a couple phone pics. I’ll do better next time.

Our balcony. I'd go back to this place just for this---it was a clean and new-ish place, but the balcony was the selling point. Note: we couldn't find anywhere to get coffee...and settled for McDonalds. We both also agreed it tasted like an ashtray. Gross.

Butterfish. This was amazing...and the first time I've had it. I ate a couple bites of the wasabi mashed potatoes underneath...those were good too, but I'm not really a potato person.

My (new) carry-on. If I could live inside it, I would.
Totally unrelated: I bought goat cheese, and have also been noticing this in others lately...it had grape vine ash in the middle. Is this just for looks? I mean, it tasted like...ash.

What do you like to do on vacation?

I’ll be honest—I snore at the thought of museums and “sightseeing” landmarks. I lived in Lexington MA, and never once paid any attention to the Battle Road (except that we once used it for an Air Force 5K) – which I’m pretty sure was part of the path of Paul Revere’s ride – and I drove by it everyday on my way to work. I’m also only vaguely aware of the history surrounding the Battle Green in Lexington (Battle of Lexington and Concord?). It’s just not my thing. I like the beach and looking at the ocean (I hate going in it). Ali and I sat on the beach (under an umbrella) and on our balcony for two days straight. We walked a lot too, but no sightseeing or activities…

Where are you going next?ย

I’m hoping to visit Santa Monica again soon (if my cousin is ever not traveling—right now she’s in France for work). I also want to go back to San Diego this year, and I think I’ll hit up Vancouver this winter.

And…if I can get caught up on my work, I’ll be back soon with an Ugi ball review and some other fun things.

  1. I’m going to Chicago in a few weeks- hopefully my surgical wounds will be all healed by then ๐Ÿ™‚ It will be much more of a cab trip than I was expecting when I planned it though ๐Ÿ™

  2. i love that balcony photo!! what a gorgeous view.
ok, we are vacation twins/peas in a pod. you know i adore florida. and i would move there. isn’t it funny, people always say, “you’d miss the seasons.” um, no i would not. summer 365 days of the year? perfect! my top three florida spots would be 1) sarasota 2) marco island 3) naples…although i would not be that picky as long as it’s a spot in that area of florida. historic sites and museums make me snore. on vacation, i like to spend time on the beach, walk to explore the city, shop…nothing too fancy! glad you got away, lisa, and i do hope you can get to santa monica. i have no travel plans lined up, boo hoo!

  3. That balcony really is beautiful!ย  I could spend an hour or twelve sitting there, staring out to sea.ย  Glad you had a great weekend!

  4. Yup—that sums it up! We shopped for a bit (but I didn’t buy anything)…the beach and the balcony owned my heart!
I’ve never been to Sarasota….I’ll have to check it out next time I go ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Gorgeous! How did you find the place with the balcony? Amazing about the coffee. I thought Starbucks was everywhere! (Good thing you had the view to distract you.)

  6. The balcony was total luck…we compared places for a while, and decided on that one but had no idea the balcony would be so awesome (and actually facing the gulf instead of a parking lot!). On the day we left, we did find a Starbucks….it was about 5 miles away inside a Target!

  7. I love your carry on as well! The color is beautiful and it looks like it would go with just about anything…

My next vacation is San Francisco (again!)… I get to go spend a week playing with my little cousins and then a couple of days staying with my Aunt and Uncle just outside of the city. I’m going in November so the countdown is on!

Loved reading about your trip. Just returned from the Alsace region of France. Great white wines, beautiful towns with flowers everywhere, and friendly people. Besides visiting the open air markets and a few historic sites, I like to (1) go for a hike or bike ride and (2) kick back and read a book on vacation. My husband likes to be on the go… Can you spell negotiation? ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Ahh I am jealous. ย I love Florida. When I am onย vacationย I try to enjoy myself everyday. That could be with relaxing, or doing something active and fun. The next place I am going will probably be Arizona, because that is where I always end up going.ย

Ah, traveling.ย  I recently got bitten by the “I want to travel” bug and am super excited that I found a super cheap deal in Montreal, so my husband and I are going there for our 2 year anniversary!ย  We found a few great gluten free vegetarian restaurants that I can’t wait to try out, and there are lots of open air markets with fresh local produce that I’m excited to visit.ย  On vacation, I’m all about the food and art museums, and hiking!

  11. ash? say whaaat!? that’s odd! I would totally come live inside your carry-on with you btw. its purdy! <3

all my fam is all over florida so its basically all i think of when it comes to vacations. well… and VA/DC =) love it!

  12. I wish I had plans for a vacation. We never seem to find the time to get away. It’s a horrible thing, but I know we will get to the point where we’re comfortable not working and playing. I do love the beach. It’s been so long!

  13. florida is still on my to go list and although i have been travelling so much i could not make it there yet. The butterfish looks amazing- love melt in your mouth fish and am also not a potato fan. they taste so bland to me. like sweet potatoes though, they taste a bit more interesting ๐Ÿ™‚ enjoy travelling!

  14. Haha—that’s funny!
I loved Ft. Myers (that’s where I was last weekend). I’ve just only been there once, and so I need to go again to explore more before it moves up on my rank list… Next time I go, I’ll ask you for recommendations for restaurants, grocery stores, coffee places, etc! We had a rough time loving Publix….stayed at the Diamondhead Beach resort…it was simple and really clean and nice!

  15. It looks like you had an amazing vacation! Everything looked wonderful, especially that Butterfish! I’ve never heard of it before but it looks yummy!

When I’m on vacation I like a mix of relaxing with a little bit of sightseeing. More relaxing of course and no schedules! ๐Ÿ™‚
