Giveaway: Emmy’s Organics Macaroons and Granola!

It’s no secret around here that I love macaroons. I’m a huge fan of coconut products, and once bought 25lbs of raw unprocessed coconut flakes because I didn’t think about how much that actually was (it was on sale online at Wilderness Family Naturals! …Note: I also almost bought this again recently, knowing how much it would be–that’s how much I love coconut and macaroons.). ย When I had my 25lbs of coconut, I started making many things with it, and I also learned a lot about coconut oil and what the potential health benefits can be.

Coconut (raw, unprocessed) is high in saturated fat, but rather than the health-damaging long chain fatty acids, it has medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). The awesome thing about it is that the human body can’t store MCFAs, and has to use them for energy. Note: if you overeat anything, you’ll gain weight, even coconut. It’s just helpful—not a miracle!

Using virgin organic coconut oil is very beneficial for health, including boosting a slightly underactive thyroid. ย (The therapeutic dose is said to be 3-4 tbsp a day). Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, and melts at about 77 degrees. It can be used as a moisturizer (although it will also make your clothes greasy feeling, and can even soak through—yes, this happened on my legs in my dress pants at work!). It can also be used for cooking and sauteing because it has a very high smoking point.

Coconut contains lauric acid, and it also has antibacterial properties. I’ve bought young thai coconuts in order to use the meat and water (I bought a dremel saw to open them…after hacking at them outside on the sidewalk was not an overwhelming success).

First, drill a hole in the top and bottom, and drain out the water. Next, saw or chop the coconut in half and scoop out the meat. This is a frustrating process, and the meat texture and amount is totally variable!

I love that Emmy’s Organics makes macaroons! ย They have a variety of flavors, and Samantha (one of the owners) generously offered to send me samples to review. I was thrilled—I had bought the coconut vanilla flavor before, but none of the others. I’ve reviewed them for you below, and I hope you’ll go to their website and buy some for yourself! ย Also, check out their blog. In addition, you can enter below to win a variety pack of macaroons and a sample of granola.

Macaroons and Granola to Review (identical to what the winner of the giveaway will get!)
Chai Spice: As a newly developed chai fan, I really loved this flavor! Joe, however, wouldn't even try it. (Ha--more for me!)
Mint Chip: Love these! I actually bought another pack because they were so good---I'm a big mint chip fan, and I intended to share with my mom (but ate them all), so I got more ๐Ÿ™‚
Choco-Orange: I've tried making something similar to this flavor, but it didn't turn out great---Emmy's choco-orange is awesome, exactly the right amount of orange!
Dark Cacao: This was Joe's second favorite. I also loved it---a lot. It tastes a little like a Mounds Bar (Joe said it's exactly like Mounds...but I think it's better!).
Coconut Vanilla: Yum! The clear winner for us! We loved all the flavors...but we love "plain" vanilla the most!
Lemon Ginger: Yum! I'm a big ginger fan, and this reminded me of some cookies I've had in the past (only these are way healthier!). Joe liked these too, and I saved one for my mom because I'm sure she'll like it!
Granola: This granola is so simple and delicious! It is made with buckwheat, and being from buckwheat country, I'm always ready to support buckwheat products. I also love buckwheat because of its superior nutritional profile (and protein content!).

The overall verdict? ย Amazing! ย Joe and I both loved the macaroons and the granola, and we’ll definitely be buying more of it. I’m looking forward to taking a road trip to Ithaca this summer and visiting Emmy’s Organics at the farmer’s market!

  1. I've never had a macaroon! So I can't say what flavor I love – but I do love chai, dark chocolate and coconut! So most likely, any flavor! ๐Ÿ˜‰ My favorite coconut thing is coconut butter, spread onto a warmed banana!

  2. I actually am trying to decide if I've gotten over my coconut allergy (i was when i was a kid) or not..I had a sip of coconut milk yesterday, and think i'm going to try adding it in to my diet little by little to experiment — so this would be perfect!!

  3. I already like you and emmy's on facebook!

  5. My favorite way to eat coconut is to have on my warm oats! I top my oatmeal with coconut butter and/or shredded coconut, the coconut butter is the best, it melts on the oats and make it taste amazing. And my favorite flavor of macaroons would have to be the chocolate ones, yum!!

  6. lemon ginger sounds amazing! how similar are these to the ones you shared with me last week? also, i need to place an order for one large batch of (your) granola, please! ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. I like to use coconut to make coconut butter and use that for baking! My favorite flavor of macaroon is vanilla!!

  8. Great contest. I am following you on twitter now. (can't believe I wasn't). I love coconut because it is healthy for us and because it just reminds me of the beach and tropics.

  10. Mmmhh, I love cocoa macaroons! And coconut is amazing in everything, in my morning oatmeal, in my coconut-curry lunch or in my evening coconut cocoa drink:)

  11. Gina (Candid RD)

Great giveaway! I was never a fan of macaroons until I started dating Nick. In fact, I hated coconut, PERIOD, before we started dating. Now I love it! I don't eat coconut, or macaroons, very often, but when I do I love it in ice cream or in cookies/granola bars.

  12. My favorite way to eat coconut is on top of oats…and my fav macaron flavor is chocolate dipped. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. I think that my favorite flavor of macaroon would be the chai macaroon. I am in love with chai.

  14. Lisa, those look amazing! I like to eat coconut in oatmeal and cookies. I've only ever made macaroons for a friend for Christmas, and I dipped the top of them in chocolate. Yum! I would die to try the chai flavored ones. Sooo yummy sounding!

  15. ohh what a fun giveaway! I have to say I do like coconut oil but am not a huge macaroon fan. Therefore I won't enter the giveaway but I am happy to publicize the giveaway for you! ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you have a great start to your week Lisa! ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. 25lbs of coconut?! Haha!! These macaroons look AMAZING! I would love, love, love to try them!!

  18. Allie @ PickyEatingRD

My fav macaroon flavor is vanilla…. I am so simple and boring!

  19. The dark cacao looks delicious – seems like the perfect dessert…orrr snack ๐Ÿ™‚ but I'm also a sucker for vanilla!!

  20. I would definitely have to go with the chai spice – that looks delicious! When I lived with my parents, my mom would cook with coconut a lot in savory dishes. But now that I'm not living at my parents house, I have to say my use of coconut has been limited to coconut milk. This reminds me that I need to bother my mom for some more cooking lessons! ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. I'd love to try the Dark Cacao macaroons… and I love coconut in coconut butter form!! On oats, in baked goods, even on sweet potatoes!
    Love your blog!
